An open-plan living room with ceiling downlights on and a brass pendant over the bench
Light it up

Lighting & LED.

Downlights, pendants, outdoor and garden lighting. The right light in the right place changes how a home feels, and modern LED slashes the running cost while it's at it.

What's included.

Good lighting is design work as much as electrical work. We plan the layout with you around where you cook, read and relax. Then we install clean, dimmable LED that flatters the space instead of flattening it.

  • LED downlights Whole-home layouts or room-by-room. Even spacing, warm or cool white, dimmable where you want it.
  • Halogen to LED swaps Replace hot, hungry halogens with efficient LEDs. Same holes, a fraction of the running cost.
  • Feature & pendant lighting Kitchen island pendants, wall lights, under-cabinet strips, supplied or install-only.
  • Outdoor & security lighting Garden, entertaining-area and sensor lighting, weatherproofed and wired to last.

Decide these before the first hole is cut.

A lighting job goes better when four or five choices are made up front.

  • Which rooms, and what happens in each one: cooking, reading, television, sleeping
  • Warm white or cool white, room by room
  • Which lights dim, and which switch from two places
  • Where the furniture and the benchtops will sit, so the light lands on them
  • Any fittings you have already bought, with the box or the model number

Light where you need it, none where you don't.

Colour temperature, in plain terms.

The number on the box, in Kelvin, decides how a room feels. These are the Australian Government's bands.

What moves the quote.

The same twelve downlights can be a short job or a long one.

  • Access above the ceiling. Roof space over the room makes new downlights quick. A second storey above, or a flat roof, means more cutting and patching.
  • New positions or the same holes. Swapping fittings into existing holes is the simplest lighting job there is. A new layout means new cable.
  • Dimming and switching. Dimmers, two way switching and sensors each add parts and time. LEDs need a dimmer made for LEDs.
  • Indoors or out. Garden and wall lights need weatherproof fittings and cable run outside the house.

The numbers on LED.

  • 75%

Less electricity than a halogen. That is the Australian Government's figure for a good LED.

  • 15x

A good LED can last 5 to 15 times longer than the halogen it replaces.

  • 10%

Lighting's share of the average Australian household electricity bill runs from 5% to 10%.

  • Not every LED dims. The globe has to be a dimmable one, or the dimmer has to be LED compatible.
  • An IC-rated downlight can sit against ceiling insulation and be covered by it. Other fittings need a clear gap around them to prevent fire.
  • Outdoor security lights are best switched by timers, daylight controls and motion sensors.

Questions, answered.

How much do LED downlights cost to run?
About a quarter of what the halogens used. The Australian Government's figure for a good LED is around 75% less electricity than a halogen.
Warm white or cool white?
Warm white (2700 to 3200K) for living rooms and bedrooms. Cool white (around 4100K) for garages, workshops and other task areas. We'll show you both on the day.
Can you match my existing downlight holes?
Usually yes. Most LED fittings are available in sizes that cover standard halogen cut-outs, so no patching needed.
Do you do garden lighting?
Yes. Low-voltage garden runs, up-lights and sensor floods, all weatherproofed to code.
Can downlights sit under ceiling insulation?
Only an IC-rated fitting can be covered by insulation. Anything else needs a clear gap around it, which is a fire rule, so the rating gets checked before insulation goes back.
Why do my LEDs flicker on the dimmer?
A dimmer built for halogens will do that. LEDs need a dimmable globe and an LED compatible dimmer.
Is there a government discount for switching to LED?
Not for most jobs. Victorian Energy Upgrades removed its incentives for LED lighting upgrades from 1 February 2023. For a business, a discount remains only where the existing lights are fluorescent.
